INSIGHTS & AWARENESS: H2 IN HOUSEHOLDS FROM AN
EXPERT PERSPECTIVE
The integration of hydrogen (H₂) into the residential energy sector is increasingly discussed as a key
component of the energy transition. While technological developments are progressing, there remains a
significant need for a well-founded assessment of actual application possibilities, challenges, and limitations in domestic settings. In particular, there is often a gap between theoretical potential and practical implementation.
The project “H2 – Power to You” addresses this gap through a qualitative approach based on expert
interviews. The aim is to generate well-grounded insights from different perspectives and present them in a way that is accessible to a broader audience. To achieve this, three key groups are included: academic hydrogen experts, heating engineers as practical implementers, and private individuals who already use hydrogen-based heating systems.
This combination enables a holistic view that reflects both technical potential and real-life experiences in everyday use. The project focuses on topics such as safety, economic viability, efficiency, infrastructure, and practical challenges related to installation and operation. At the same time, existing uncertainties and possible misconceptions are identified. A central objective of the project is not only to collect insights but also to process and present them in a clear and accessible manner. In doing so, it aims to provide a well-informed basis for decision-making for private individuals engaging with future energy solutions.
Within the HAFIS framework, “H2 – Power to You” follows an intrapreneurial approach that brings together scientific expertise, practical experience, and user perspectives. The project contributes to shaping a publicly oriented discussion on hydrogen in the residential sector and enables a realistic assessment of its role in the future energy supply.
