SUSTAINABLE SHORT CHAINED OLEFINS FOR THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY
Olefins play a central role in the chemical industry and form the basis of a wide range of materials and
products used in everyday life. Whether in packaging, clothing, or technical applications, their versatility
makes them indispensable. However, their conventional production is closely tied to fossil resources, which
presents significant challenges in the context of climate change and future feedstock availability. Therefore,
the need for more sustainable industrial processes has intensified.
The SuC=C project addresses this broader challenge of transition from fossil-based resources to renewable
feedstocks by exploring future perspectives for olefin production via CO₂ valorization. A central focus lies in
the direct use of CO₂ as a carbon source in combination with the high-temperature Fischer–Tropsch
technology. By directly incorporating CO₂ into such process concepts, the project investigates pathways that
avoid the need for synthesis gas generation, which is currently also based on fossil resources and represents
an energy-intensive step in established production routes.
The aim of the SuC=C project is to develop a conceptual plant design that brings together different
technological options and system considerations. In parallel, exchanges with experts from industry help to
better understand general requirements and boundary conditions for potential future applications. In this way,
scientific insights are continuously aligned with industrial perspectives to ensure practical relevance.
By combining technical exploration with a broader system perspective, SuC=C contributes to identifying
possible directions for a more sustainable chemical industry. It also supports the ongoing transition toward
more circular carbon use.
