MAKING BLOOD LIPIDS VISIBLE IN REAL TIME FOR BETTER HEART HEALTH
What if we could see how our blood lipid levels change in real time? Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide. A major underlying risk factor is dyslipidemia – imbalances in blood lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides – which often develop gradually and remain unnoticed over long periods. Today, blood lipid levels are typically assessed through infrequent laboratory tests. These isolated measurements provide only limited insight into how lipid levels change over time, making it difficult to capture dynamic processes and respond at the right moment.
LipoTrack aims to address this gap by making blood lipid dynamics visible. Based on an innovative microfluidic sensor platform, LipoTrack enables real-time monitoring of lipid biomarkers from very small blood samples. This approach creates new opportunities to better understand how lipid levels respond to therapy, lifestyle changes, and disease progression.
The project initially focuses on a clearly defined clinical setting: lipoprotein apheresis, a treatment for high-risk patients with severe lipid disorders. In current practice, lipid levels are measured only before and after the procedure. Continuous monitoring during treatment could provide additional insights and support more individualized clinical decision-making.
Looking ahead, the LipoTrack platform can be adapted to different device formats, ranging from in-clinic systems to portable solutions for home use and, in the long term, wearable concepts. This opens up perspectives for applications in acute care, long-term patient management, and preventive health monitoring. By enabling access to dynamic lipid information, LipoTrack contributes to a more informed and forward looking approach to cardiovascular health.
