OPEN-SOURCE INTRAORAL 3D SCANNING: PRECISE, MODULAR, AFFORDABLE
Dental clinics today face a stark choice: invest €40,000–€80,000 in a proprietary intraoral scanner with annual software subscriptions and closed ecosystems – or go without. For smaller practices, academic institutions, and researchers, this is simply not viable. Luminos OralScanner is changing that.
Luminos OralScanner is an open-source, modular intraoral 3D scanner being developed by Ahmed Qamesh at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), in collaboration with GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. The proposed device is designed to capture detailed 3D images of teeth, gums, and oral structures with approximately 25 µm accuracy – targeting clinical-grade performance at a fraction of the cost of existing proprietary systems.
The concept enables a real-time processing unit in a compact, handheld form factor. A full dual-arch scan covering both upper and lower jaw – is envisioned to be completed in a single continuous pass, regardless of operator speed or experience, minimizing chair time and patient discomfort.
At the heart of the vision is an open-core architecture that integrates seamlessly with standard laboratory and clinical equipment, including dental CAD/CAM workstations, intraoral imaging platforms, and storage systems – without proprietary adaptations. Researchers would gain full access to raw 3D point cloud data, enabling next-generation AI diagnostic tools free from ecosystem lock-in.
Currently at proof-of-concept stage, the project aims to deliver a functional handheld prototype within 18 months upon Fund approval, following a hybrid commercialization model combining an open-source core with premium hardware, AI add-ons, and cloud-based services.
